A mental health crisis exists in the Australian Indigenous population. Stressful life events are experienced at high rates and psychological distress levels are rising. Psychology has a significant role to play in addressing these inequities and health crises. AIPEP draws on multiple perspectives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders in order to develop guidance, support and recommendations for psychology training programs to play their role in closing the gap. AIPEP focuses specifically on how psychology training can develop a more culturally aware and culturally responsive mental health workforce, and how the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander psychologists can be increased through recruitment, retention and graduation from both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
AIPEP is gathering resources that are useful for educators and practitioners in psychology, relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social and emotional wellbeing, and to the psychology curriculum.
